For many city dwellers Japan is a country of high buildings, an up-tempo lifestyle with a cute countryside that feels like an afterthought. But for Dutch artist Maan Limburg the country stands for desolation and empty houses.
Limburg started photographing the places she encountered whilst travelling the countryside in 2018 and 2019. She found an incredible amount of abandoned houses, factories, hotels and restaurants – all full of memories of people long gone. Her images of these locations will be shown in the exhibition “Without us”, which features selected works of her project “The Lost World”. The exhibition will be on display in Tokyo between 12/04/2024 and 12/05/2024 at Jinny Street Gallery, Tokyo.
Jinny Street gallery, known for its eclectic programming of young talent, is Tokyo’s most approachable gallery. Located out in the streets of Jingumae (Shibuya, Tokyo) the visitor can be surprised by art at all hours of the day. Jinny Street Gallery was founded when two artists noticed the area had 42 desolated viewing boxes and thought it a shame to leave them empty. Nowadays the gallery is a well-known phenomenon in the area, and its origin story suits Limburg’s “Without us” like no other location.

Is a self-taught visual artist with a background in photography and journalism. Her work is based around her social commentary packaged in enticing colours, textures, sounds, smells and beautiful imagery. She does this through building her own world in exhibitions, books and images. Her “The Lost World” project highlighted the vacancy and aging population in Japan and put questions of worth into the viewers mind.
